AED EDUCATION ABROAD INITIATIVE GOALS AND PRINCIPLES
INITIATIVE GOALS • Create, sustain, and encourage equal access to education abroad opportunities for U.S. students in the developing world. • Motivate and facilitate participation of students from ethnically, economically, and racially diverse backgrounds into education abroad programs in the developing world. • Provide service learning opportunities for U.S. students interested in international development and assistance with local, U.S., and international NGOs working in the developing world. • Build interest in and capacity for hosting U.S. study abroad programs among higher education institutions in the developing world. • Foster participation in longer-term language- and cultural-based immersion programs for nontraditional students, including community college students and students in the sciences, engineering, and health services.
INITIATIVE PRINCIPLES AED is committed to providing education abroad experiences for students that are high quality, academically grounded, culturally sensitive, and available to all qualified individuals.
AED is striving to ensure that higher education institutions in the developing world are supported in their efforts to serve as hosts for visiting study abroad participants as an integral component of their own institutional capacity building, and to do so in a manner that values the educational mission they have for their students and country.
