Placement Process

Application Materials: Submit applications for direct residency placement to the Academy for Educational Development at the address listed below. The applications will be reviewed by the AED Medical Team for completeness and content quality. Incomplete applications will not be accepted for processing.

Deadlines: Candidates are expected to meet advertised deadlines and be responsive to AED staff by email or phone. Please note that delays in preparing your application may cost you submission opportunities.

Document Revisions: Applications will be reviewed by the AED Medical Team for completeness and content quality. Guidance will be provided regarding style and approach for CVs and statement of purpospersonal statements.e, CV, and letters of recommendations.   If there are any concerns regarding low grades achieved in specific courses, candidates may be asked for an explanation regarding their performance. Applicants are expected to review their file materials for adherence to these guidelines.  Written materials should be carefully proofed for grammar and spelling. AED eExpects candidates to revisego through several revisions of your  CVs and personal statements, with assistance from AED staff, to achieve necessary quality and meet standard U.S. formatting protocols.

Specialties: AED makes every effort to match candidates with their preferred placement. Candidates should note, however, that several factors may make that difficult to achieve. Some medical specialties are more competitive than others. Also, availability of spots from the AED consortium of participating hospitals varies according to the current needs of the institutions. Flexible candidates will find greater opportunities.

ERAS Accounts: Many AED consortium hospitals require candidates to submit applications through the ERAS system. Candidates are individually responsible for registering with ECFMG for an ERAS account and uploading materials to meet advertised deadlines.

World Education Services (WES) Credentialing: Applications submitted through AED to hospital programs after January 1 will need to complete WES credentialing.  Please see AED website for details at http://cap.aed.org.

Matching: AED will review completed applications for matching to placement opportunities within our consortium of hospital programs, based on program preference and fulfillment of minimum program requirements.

Geographical Preferences: Candidates must be prepared to accept interviews and, ultimately, placement in any U .S. geographic region.

Hospital Submission: AED will forward applications to medical residency programs. The residency program directors will decide which candidates to interview and, ultimately, whether or not to accept the candidate into their program.

Interviews: Guidelines to interview will be provided to candidates prior to attending an interview. Further coaching will be available from AED as necessary.

Accepting Offer of Residency: Successful candidates will receive an acceptance letter from the hospital, which must be signed and returned to AED with a copy sent to SACM.  Prior to accepting the direct placement, the candidate must formally withdraw from the Match and provide a copy of the withdrawal confirmation to AED.

Declining Offer of Residency: A candidate has ten days to decline an offer of residency. A decision to decline must be sent to AED within that time period via letter or email. Please note: Once an offer of residency has been made, the candidate's application will not be submitted for further program opportunities through AED.

Application Close Out: In the event that a candidate's application is rejected from three or more institutions, AED reserves the right to close that application.

Hospital Contact: The candidate agrees not to contact any hospital staff directly at any time unless specifically directed to do so by AED. Any violation of this policy will result in termination of the application for direct medical residency placement.

Guarantees: Each candidate's own qualifications, test results, grade transcripts, recommendation letters, and professional experience are looked at carefully by each reviewing residency program. Candidates must meet program standards at each hospital.  The AED program works to provide you with opportunities to get accepted into a program, but we do not guarantee placement.
